Your Change Is Your Choice

Thirty-six years ago, when I was only 14 years old, I made a big mistake. Along with two other friends of mine, I committed several crimes that eventually got us arrested. Instead of being sent to juvenile detention with others my age, those crimes landed me in prison with adults twice and three times my age. By the time I was tried and convicted, I was 15. After earning a felony record and serving time, I believed my life would never amount to more than a few 9-5 jobs with average pay. Because of this mentality, I continued down the same destructive path.

This only furthered my self-destruction. I eventually ended up with two additional trips to state prison, which led to a federal prison term. It was during my last conviction that things started to change. After watching another inmate lose many of his immediate family members while they were en route to visit him, I slowly began to realize the impact my life had on the people who loved and cared about me. This prompted me to change. Although it wasn’t easy, I began the slow process of transforming into the person I am today.

I am now a completely different man who has not only reinvented himself but also helps others do the same. And as I look into the eyes of my younger self, I can see him thanking me for not giving up on him.

So listen up, people: just because you make a mistake doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Change is a choice that will sit and wait for you to choose it. Don’t give up on yourself! Life will always be what you make it, so don’t settle for outcomes you don’t like. Change them, and become someone you can be proud of.
